The Garden of Fine Arts, Kyoto

“The Garden of Fine Arts, Kyoto” is the first painting garden in the world where visitors can appreciate ceramic board paintings that reproduce the beauty of famous paintings in their original form. The garden opened in 1994 in the heart of the Kitayama area in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto.

The greatest feature of The Garden of Fine Arts, Kyoto is that visitors can view under sunlight eight of the world's masterpieces, including Claude Monet's “Waterlilies, Morning”, Michelangelo Buonarroti's “The Last Judgment”, and Monk Toba's “Caricatures of Birds, Animals and People”. Four of the works on display were exhibited at the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition, and the remaining four were created especially for this garden.

These ceramic board paintings were conceived and planned by SAKAIYA Taichi, a well-known writer and economic commentator who was involved in the 1970 Osaka Expo as a producer, and were donated to Kyoto Prefecture by their owner, KAYAMORI Shinji, president of DAIKOKU DENKI CO.

Another highlight is the architecture designed by world-renowned architect ANDO Tadao. The fair-faced concrete slab structure, typical of Ando's architecture, looks beautiful from any angle, and visitors can enjoy the contrast with the natural surroundings. Located next to the Kyoto Botanical Garden, it is a spot where visitors can spend a relaxing time in combination with the surrounding nature.
