Nakanoshima Kosetsu Museum of Art

The Nakanoshima Kosetsu Museum of Art celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Kosetsu Museum of Art (Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture) and opened in 2018 in Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka, as its second museum.

The museum holds 19 important cultural properties and 33 important pieces of art, as well as the collection of MURAYAMA Ryuhei, the founder of the Asahi Shimbun Company. “Kosetsu” is Mr. Murayama's pen name.

After the opening of Japan to the outside world, Japanese art began to flow out of the country, and Mr Murayama devoted himself to collecting artworks in an effort to stem the tide. The museum is dedicated to preserving and researching valuable cultural assets, as well as passing on irreplaceable cultural assets to the future.

The museum contains a wide variety of cultural assets collected by the Murayama family, including swords and armory, Buddhist art, calligraphy, medieval and early-modern paintings and tea ceremony utensils. Another highlight is the "Nakanoshima Genan", a faithful reproduction using traditional architectural techniques of the existing tea ceremony room "Genan" in the former Murayama family residence, a designated National Important Cultural Property.

Although the museum is located in an urban high-rise building, the space with its wooden faceted latticework and earthen walls is a fusion of tradition and innovation. The museum has been designed to create a comfortable space where visitors can spend a luxurious time away from the hustle and bustle of the city and quietly enjoy the works of art.

The museum shop offers a wide range of original goods such as wasanbon (Japanese paper) and kaishi (Japanese paper), as well as related books and stationery. The sophisticated items make great souvenirs. After viewing the art, be sure to stop by.
