At the heart of the Netherlands Pavilion floats a luminous sphere, "man made sun – The Sun for the Next Generation," symbolizing sustainable clean energy and the rising sun.
When viewed from above, the rectangular structure with the central sphere strikingly resembles the Japanese flag. The sphere itself is designed to be the same size as the "Golden Face" of the Tower of the Sun from Expo 1970 in Osaka, celebrating the enduring friendship and partnership between Japan and the Netherlands.
Visitors can step inside this sphere and immerse themselves in an unforgettable experience—the highlight of the pavilion journey.
Water, a historically significant element for the Netherlands, is also a key theme in the design of the Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai.
The exterior walls feature undulating slats that metaphorically represent water, while the mirrored roof reflects the sky, creating the illusion of the sphere floating when viewed from the wooden ring above.
A Journey Towards an Energy Revolution,
Led by "man made sun – The Sun for the Next Generation"
As visitors enter the Netherlands Pavilion, they receive an Energy Orb in their hands. Guided by this orb, they embark on an interactive journey to experience the transformation of energy systems.
The Netherlands envisions "sustainable clean energy for all." We hope visitors will be inspired by this vision, be stimulated by innovative technologies, and take home unforgettable memories.
Zero Waste: A Pavilion Designed for Circularity
Circularity is a system that enables the repeated and continuous use of limited resources. The Netherlands Pavilion is designed based on this principle.
All construction materials used are registered in a system, ensuring that they will be repurposed or reused after the Expo ends.
By maximizing the use of dismantlable and reassemblable materials, we preserve the value of resources and make them available for future use.
Let's start solving global challenges together
The Netherlands is committed to working with partners worldwide to tackle the pressing challenges our society and planet face. Climate change. Energy transition. Food security. Global health. Addressing these issues requires the collaboration of many nations and people.
We must view problems from diverse perspectives, break free from conventional thinking, and explore new ideas and possibilities. By standing on Common Ground and working together, we can create innovative and sustainable solutions.
Common Ground: The Foundation for Co-Creation
"Common Ground" is about empathy, sharing, and collaboration—it serves as the foundation for co-creation and the birth of new values. This concept lies at the core of the Netherlands' identity, philosophy, and landscape.
With nearly a quarter of its land below sea level, the Netherlands has a history of resilience and ingenuity. For centuries, the Dutch have faced countless challenges in their battle against water, learning the importance of cooperation to achieve shared goals. This struggle has been the starting point for cross-border and cross-cultural collaboration.
Global challenges cannot be solved by any one country alone. We must unite our energy, expertise, and ideas. The Netherlands Pavilion is an open space designed to foster new collaborations.
425 Years of Japan-Netherlands Relations
Japan and the Netherlands share a long-standing, deep bond. Their relationship dates back to 1600, when the Dutch ship De Liefde (meaning "Love") arrived on the shores of Kyushu, marking the beginning of diplomatic ties. In 2025, Japan and the Netherlands will celebrate 425 years of friendship.
Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai will serve as a platform for international exchange in art, culture, and heritage. It will further strengthen the connection between Japan and the Netherlands, providing a Common Ground for sharing a hopeful vision for the future.
